York bus company makes trainers from old seat covers

BENDY buses are perhaps one of the most hated sights on our streets, but now the people of York can get their own back and trample them into the ground – literally.

Bus company First, which operates buses in the city, has teamed up with a recycling company and made a range of basketball boots made out of recycled buses.

The fabric has been reclaimed from worn-out bus seats while the rubber soles were originally tyres.

First has entered a partnership with TRiP (Transport Recycling in Partnership) to help it develop its business of re-using and recycling transport industry waste. The partnership intends to demonstrate the benefits of improved environmental management via the reuse of materials such as seat covers.

The new limited edition basketball-style trainers have now been launched – albeit with a whopping £90 price tag.

Richard Harris, commercial director of First in Yorkshire, said: “I hope to see York’s streets full of people wearing our bus seat covers on their feet in 2009.

“I am delighted that First is supporting TRiP in this imaginative and innovative initiative to find new and sustainable uses for materials that the transport industry has traditionally thrown away to landfill or incinerated.

“The support for TRiP is part of First’s commitment to sustainability and part of its waste management programme which, combined with our industry leading Climate Change Strategy, will contribute to reducing our impact on the environment.”

Robert Taylor-Read, projects director at TRiP, said: “With First’s help we have produced some of the greenest trainers on the market. Not only are the uppers made from restored bus seat fabrics, the soles contain recycled tyre rubber.

“In addition, we have incorporated high-quality napa leather in the trim, using repurposed chequebook wallets from a high street bank.

“Each pair is a limited edition relic of transport design heritage which are comfortable, stylish and robust.

“I hope they prove popular in Yorkshire.”

you cant just single out bus drivers, you must have a reason, everyone on this site just loves slagging off first york. all drivers given the correct conditions can be dangerous.

At £90 a pair, the price is in line with First's ticketing policy! Still almost cheaper to buy the shoes than to catch the bus though :-)

No they are not. They look c**p and I cannot imagine why anyone would be seen out in them, perhaps the blind will buy lots.

Certain people are atrracted to the job as in many professions. Perhaps all jobs should by law have a psyche test to make sure applicants are suitable. Let's face it at £90 for a pair of already 'old' boots First is milking the green / recycling ethic for all the positive spin it can get. Perhaps they should become part of the uniform.

Hate bendy buses ? I'd rather travel in one than in a double decker.

Yes I can. The article is about First, so it would appear to be pertinent and to the point.

First employ a few nasty people to drive their buses.

£90 for trainers?

First have finally come up with a way of charging more for walking than for using the bus

what on earth has footwear got to do with your ridicules. all drivers can be nasty and aggressive, you obviously hate all first york employees for some reason. this site is for polite comments not rude comments about fellow bus drivers.

I don't hate any First employee, but I'm not keen on a minority being allowed to behave in the way they do. By which I mean being openly threatening, verbally abusive and using a large vehicle to bully pedestrians and other road-users.

All drivers on the road may be nasty and aggressive at some point but they are not all employed in the public service industry to carry large amounts of human cargo in one of the largest vehicles on the road.
Bus drivers should be erring on the side of caution to a much greater degree than your average motorist. Surely that's self-evident?

As for this site being for polite comments? You either haven't read all that many or you're on a different site than you thought!
