Bid to save Brayton post office continues

THE fight continues to save a Selby village’s post office from closure.

Brayton Post Office faces the axe following the closure of the village’s Costcutter store, where the post office is based.

Other post offices have closed down because the Royal Mail says they do not have enough customers and are not financially viable, but the Brayton outlet is shutting because of a lack of premises.

The race is now on to find an alternative site.

If none is found, it will close in February.

Selby MP John Grogan said: “Brayton Post Office is at the bustling heart of the community. It would be unthinkable for it disappear from the village.

“I would hope that like the case in Sherburn-in-Elmet, an alternative will soon be provided, especially as this is such a large community”.

Other local politicians are also hoping for a solution.

Coun Mark Crane, leader of Selby District Council, who lives in Brayton, said: “It is a great fear for the village that we will lose the post office. We are pro-actively looking for a new location because it would be a great loss for the community.”

The saga has come about because of the decision by Costcutter owner Mirza Ali to close the supermarket because he said he had suffered a huge drop in takings following the opening of a Tesco Express store in Doncaster Road.

But though the post office faces an uncertain future, owners Charles and Pat Hill are refusing to give up hope.

They have also arranged a mince pies and mulled wine party to thank all their customers for their support over the last year.

Mrs Hill said: “As a small appreciation of our thanks for their support over the previous year we thought it would be a festive idea to offer our loyal customers a warming drink and mince pie when they call in”.

She is looking forward to seeing her customers between 9.30am and 4.30pm tomorrow to share a little festive spirit with them all.

There in lies the problem, If i was to go to work on a 'normal' 9-5 job, how do i post a letter at the post office? its closed. the only way to keep post offices open is to alter opening times so that working people can visit them on their way home 10.30-5.30 or 11am-6pm then folk may start coming in. I stopped taxing my car at the pst office because its a pain to get to with opening times, i do it online now.
A bit of creative thinking needed, has anyone approached tesco to see if they want a post office in store?

Smiler. Post offices aren't for you or anybody else that contributes to society. They are there for scroats, old f@rts and winging bar-stewards. My heart goes out to those that work in them.
