Press jobs at risk

More than 20 jobs are at risk at The Press in York as the company considers the closure of its print operation.

Under the proposal, printing of The Press and its sister weekly title would switch to another company press in Bradford.

A company statement released to staff today said that in the light of "highly challenging trading conditions" the company was looking to improve the efficiency of the business and that could mean the closure of the printing press in York by the middle of January.

Up to 22 printing and engineering jobs and a number of drivers' posts would be affected.

Under the plan, The Northern Echo, currently printed in York, along with The Durham, Chester-le-Street and Consett and Stanley Advertisers, would be printed at another press on Teesside.

Consultations are being held with all affected staff and every effort is being made to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Nice timing. Happy Xmas to our staff or what?

One consolation is that the work is being kept in the country, other York companies are sending work to India without a single story appearing in this 'news' paper.

Desperate times for the Press.

Obviously the change from Evening to Daily hasn't made a drastic change to the company's fortunes.

One solution would be to "monetise" the on-line version, the mega-obtrusive advertising carried on this site at the moment won't achieve that, some kind of micro-payment system needs to be set up, the Press are not alone in not being able to achieve that at the moment though!

So sadly no prospect of the newsprint roll transport reverting to barges rather than lorries, between Goole and York. Yet more HGV's trundling along the M62! So much for sustainability!

This has been on the cards for ages. Not a surprise to anyone who works at the Press, I suspect.

Well it makes no difference were it is printed now it is a daily paper

It is just another nail in the coffin of jobs in York

It will not improve the story's in it any

The Press has already made their pre-press team redundant and now all artworking and design is done in India.

Totally agree with myrtlescrote and tonezzzznoddedoff. "Have a merry xmas, thanks for all your hard work, but we are going to have to let you go." The press already churns out yesterdays news today, having adopted a format that the paper is ready at a.m. This may now mean we now get news two days old due to the logistics of transporting the papers from Bradford. More stories like "I've lost my camera pi*&ed up" to follow. What is the point of having a local daily newspaper if it is not local. I hope the top dogs get their marching orders too as this paper has become a farce.

So have they already let all bar one journalist go? That explains the fall and fall of The Press. Thankfully we still have the BBC News site to inform us on local news.

How illogical, transport costs plus transport time returning to York, doesn't seem feasible for profitability any way you look at it, by the time subscribers have their copy, it'll be yesterdays news

The pre-christmas timing of this news is irrelevant to Press staff. It's purely for the public. Like I said earlier, Bradford has been on the cards for ages.
