York Christmas postal strike looming

STRIKE action by York postal workers during the busy run-up to Christmas got one step closer over the weekend.

Members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) unanimously voted to ballot for strike action over a controversial decision to stop sorting second-class mail at the Leeman Road depot.

The decision comes as the company prepares for its busiest period. Royal Mail delivers 4.1 million items in the YO postcode area on an average week, but this figure rises to 5.5 million in the week before Christmas.

Union members met on Saturday afternoon to discuss industrial action following a management decision earlier this month to transfer the processing of some mail from York to the Leeds Mail Centre.

Postal workers attended the extraordinary union meeting at the Post Office Club, in Marygate.

CWU York branch secretary Dave Dowling said members had agreed to hold a ballot should Royal Mail continue with its plans without their agreement.

“The turn-out demonstrated the concern people have for the future of the York Mail Centre and the disgust felt at the proposals to move York’s second-class mail to Leeds to be sorted,” he said.

“We are thankful for all the messages of public support on this issue. Royal Mail’s proposals do not make any business sense and will worsen the quality of service and increase the costs of processing this mail.

“We call on Royal Mail to negotiate with the intent of reaching agreement on this issue.”

He said the union had put forward further proposals to the company which were “sensible and designed to maintain and improve quality and maximise efficiency”.

When The Press exclusively revealed Royal Mail’s decision earlier this month, the company said the move was intended to improve operational efficiency and would not result in the loss of any of the York centre’s 360 jobs.

It also said there were “no plans at the moment” to transfer any further mail processing from York to Leeds.

But Mr Dowling demanded Royal Mail “come clean” about the future of the Leeman Road depot.

“Instead of saying they have no current plans to close the mail centre, they should tell us and the York public we serve what their plans are for the future of the centre,” he said.

“The should commit to keeping a mail centre in the city now and for the long-term. If they refuse to do this, then only one conclusion can be drawn.”

He said strike action could be avoided if Royal Mail was serious about reaching an agreement.

Last week, a company spokeswoman said: “We remain ready to discuss our plans with the union and would urge them not to call for strike action which can only be damaging both for the business and for our customers.”

I want my mail to come from York, sorted and delivered by local people with local jobs. We'll have later deliveries if it has to be collected from Leeds and any items I have to pick up because I'm not in to sign for them will be in Leeds. Royal Mail is a service to the public it should'nt be run to make huge profits otherwise we will only end up with the poor and the elderly receiving little or no service.

STRIKE away posties.

I think most people stopped sending christmas cards ages ago, for reasons as well as, they know it wont get delivered on time.

Even the all singing, all dancing special delivery service is hit and miss at christmas time, and the compensation scheme is purposely complicated and hard to claim on.

If they cant be arsed doing their job why dont they hand in their notice and get a job they do want!! I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd love a job at Royal Mail

Don't do it lads.

The only people you will hurt are the long suffering public, some of which, have support for your cause.

You will NOT hurt Royal Mail. Their income is quite safe as all postal services are pay for upfront.
Royal Mail are guaranteed their income the moment you buy a stamp!

Think again, you really do need the publics support if you are to stop this ridiculous move to Leeds!

They're not striking for more money.
They're not striking because they don't want to work!

They striking because some of THEIR work is going to be taken away from them and given to Leeds!
Ultimately this will mean less jobs in York and that's why they're striking!

I don't know why everyone is getting wound up about 2nd class going to Leeds, the public won't see any difference,no jobs are going. All that will happen if/when the strike happens is the public will suffer and it will decrease confidence in Royal Mail.

don't know why people think any strike action will take place in the run up to xmas. it takes at least 2 weeks to organise and then get results on ballot and then 4 weeks notice has to be given for any strike dates. as they say in america " do the maths "

Like I said before, a christmas strike threat by posties is as traditional as turkey. They used to do it 20 years ago when a friend of a friend of mine was a postman.

It's just the only time of year they are holding all the cards (pun intended). It's a shame for them that the world has changed now and their hand isn't as strong as it used to be.

“Instead of saying they have no current plans to close the mail centre, they should tell us and the York public we serve what their plans are for the future of the centre,” he said.

The sentiments of Mr Dowling are touching. I somehow think that yet another strike, and at the worst possible time, is not quite 'serving the public'.

The repercussions of the last farcical strike meant that it would be enevitable that their employers would try another way to make their business profitable. It is a sad fact tha sometimes jobs have to be lost, in order to make the future of the remaining employees stronger.

I suggest that the public being forwarned about the havoc about to be wreaked by the postal workers, make alternative arrangements, as I will, and stick two fingers up at the '50 militants' as they have been described by 'doomandgloom08'.

It is not just the delays that will be the problem. It will be all those letters, cards and parcels that mysteriously go missing, as in the last strike, and the heartbreak for all those that have bought presents with money thay can little afford.

Go ahead and strike. You are losing the support of the very public that you claim to care about. Competition is out there waiting to step in.

I really wish people who comment on these things actually know what they are talking about.
The staff in york are trying to protect their jobs, nothing more nothing less.
It's a shame all the idiots who slag them off cant understand that and get a life!

Good luck to all and a big two fingers to Royal Mail!

Whilst feeling for the postal workers who feel their jobs could be in jeopardy , don't they realise that they won't really be hurting the postal service as much as the people who just want their Christmas cards and parcels delivered to their friends. To do this at this time of year will definitely lose them any sympathy they may have and create even more disillusionment and resentment amongst the public than already exists with the unreliable and erratic deliveries that exist throughout the year. Let's hope they can show some compassion and not mar people's Christmas by such selfish action as striking at this time.

They ought to picket the Park Inn when the recruitment for seasonal staff is on as they'll be the ones breaking the picket lines as they won't be unionised. Let the managers try doing a proper days work on their own and see where the mail ends up!
