BUILDING work is set to begin on a £2.2 million affordable homes project in York to meet the demand for rented family properties.

Outdated single-person properties at Poppleton Gate House, off Boroughbridge Road, will be knocked down to make way for 14 flats and five town houses as York Housing Association looks to provide homes where parents can bring up a family.

The homes have been designed by local architects Crease Strickland Parkins, and work will begin on building within weeks.

John Gilham, development and property director for York Housing Association, said: “Each of the houses and flats will be designed and built to the highest standards in line with our policy of creating places where people want to live and enjoy a good quality of life.

“The accommodation will be modern, light and airy and will be set in the existing mature garden. We are providing a play area which will be attractive to families looking for a new home to bring up their children.”

Following site development and the demolition of the building, construction of the new properties, by Simpson Ltd, will begin next month. The homes are expected to be completed in July 2009.

Social housing grants to the value of £1 million will go towards the cost of the scheme and are provided by the Housing Corporation, the Government’s national affordable homes agency.

Poppleton Gate House was converted into flats in the 1980s by York Housing Association. Prior to that, the house had been used as a hospital.

York Housing Association was established 40 years ago. Based at Monks Cross, York, it provides homes and support to more than 600 households in North and East Yorkshire.

The Boroughbridge Road scheme is part of the Housing Corporation’s plan to provide 155,000 affordable homes nationwide before 2012.

If the commendable idea of "providing homes for Parents to bring up families in" is the mission statement; why is three-quarters of the development the building of flats?
It's not about families at all is it.
