A COUPLE from York are set to tie the knot in grand style after winning a wedding worth more than £8,000, courtesy of The Press and a North Yorkshire hotel.

Angela Sherwood, 45, of Acomb, was among hundreds of people who entered the Win A Wedding competition, which was run by The Press and Burn Hall Hotel, near Huby.

Her fiancé, Steve Shepherd, 44, did not know Angela had entered the contest until she broke the news to him that they had won the wedding, which has been provided by the hotel.

Steve, who is self-employed and runs a garden design and construction business, said: “Obviously, it was a total surprise to me. I didn’t even have a clue that it might be a remote possibility.”

Father-of-one Steve said winning the competition had made it possible for the couple to have bigger and better wedding than they could ever have hoped for..

The couple’s prize includes the wedding venue at Burn Hall, a wedding breakfast for 25 guests, an evening buffet for 80 guests, and a drinks package for 25 guests.

It also includes a wedding car courtesy of Superior Motor Cars, an evening disco with DJ courtesy of 4Star Entertainment, and a wedding dress voucher courtesy of Mila Brides.

It was announced that Angela had won the competition at the Yorkshire Living Brides Event, a wedding fair held at the Ramada Jarvis Fairfield Manor hotel in Shipton, near York.

Angela, a self-employed copy writer, said: “It took a while for it to sink in – obviously I didn’t for a minute think that we would win it. It was all a bit surreal.”

To enter the competition, The Press readers had to collect tokens in the newspaper, and send them in to us along with their answer to a question about the hotel.

Angela and Steve, who decided to get married a couple of months ago, will tie the knot on October 2 next year.

They first met while working at the British Library in Wetherby about 20 years ago years, and became a couple about four years ago.
