COMPETITIVE rugby and determination were to the fore when Terrington Hall School held their inaugural under-13s 15-a-side rugby tournament.

It was the hosts who swept to victory in the four-team event, which also included Malton School, Pickering’s Lady Lumley’s School and Ryedale School, but they were made to fight all the way.

The Terrington youngsters saw off Malton School 31-0, Lady Lumley’s School 19-7 and Ryedale School 26-12 to prevail and lift the tournament trophy, which school chiefs hope will now become an annual event.

The competition was the initiative of Terrington Hall director of sport Mark Langley, supported by the school’s headmaster Jon Glen, who wished to foster sporting links between the school and its local rivals.

Glen said: “It was thoroughly enjoyable and great to see so many young people enjoying rugby. There were some terrific skills on display and we were made to work very hard for our wins. I look forward to making this an annual event.”

Ryedale School were a close second, having beaten Lady Lumley’s 24-10 and Malton School 21-18, and Malton came third after whitewashing Lady Lumley’s 28-0.

Richard Buckley, Tom Green and Lyle Hillier, coaches of Malton, Ryedale and Lady Lumley’s, were pleased their teams performed to the best of their abilities – saying the competition had been a “great opportunity for the boys”.
