TWO bikers were killed in two separate accidents in North Yorkshire – one involving a fire engine.

The first crash happened at 2.40pm on Saturday, when a Honda motorbike travelling towards Pickering on the A170 near Thornton-le-Dale was in collision with a fire engine travelling in the opposite direction.

As a result of the crash, the male rider of the motorbike, who has not been named, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the accident happened near the village of Wilton.

Four people who were in the fire engine were not injured.

The engine was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash.

It has been reported it was returning from dealing with flooding in Ryedale when the accident happened.

The road was closed for five hours while police carried out their investigations.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw either vehicle just before the incident to come forward and phone PC Richard Hammond on 0845 6060247.

The second crash happened at about 11pm on Saturday night, when a man in his late 30s from the Selby district died after his red Suzuki motorbike was involved in a collision with the central reservation on the A64 York.

The accident happened on the westbound carriageway close to the Grimston Bar slip road.

The motorbike was carrying a pillion passenger at the time and travelling from the direction of the Hopgrove roundabout.

The passenger escaped with only minor injuries and was taken to York Hospital for treatment.

Police have yet to name the rider. The road was closed for about eight hours while police investigations were carried out.

Insp Nigel Slater, of North Yorkshire Police, said they are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or seen the bike prior to the incident to phone PC Forth on 0845 6060247.
