TRANSPORT chiefs are carrying out repair work on a York road – less than two years after it was resurfaced.

Tranby Avenue, in Osbaldwick, is being closed off in sections during the next few days, while work is done to reconstruct lower areas of the road. The road was last resurfaced in November 2006.

Local resident Mark Warters said the original work had been a “complete and utter waste of public money”.

“If they’d done the job right in the first place it would have saved public money and avoided all this disruption,” he said.

Liberal Democrat city councillor Jonathan Morley, who represents Osbaldwick ward, said: “I suppose, in a way, it may be that previously they were trying to minimise the disruption when the work was done before and, with hindsight, that perhaps wasn’t the best way of doing it.

“It would have been good if the work had been successful the first time, as you would have expected but, obviously, if it’s not done right it’s good that it’s being done now.”

Coun Morley said he was very pleased the work was being done, because residents had been experiencing difficulties.

He said the authority had adopted standard procedure when the previous work was done. “It looked fine,” he said. “People were pleased with it at the time. We’re pleased the work’s being done, but sorry that it proved necessary.”

A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “When the road was resurfaced in 2006, the damaged top layers of the road were removed and replaced. Additional work was also carried out to the lower layers where it was found to have failed previously.

“Unfortunately, other lower areas of the road not evident at the time of the works are now failing. These failing areas have been amplified by unforeseen drainage problems and these areas now need more major reconstruction work.”

She said the work was taking place until Friday, during which time access would be restricted for people accessing the properties at either side of the work. The work began yesterday.

Maybe the local residents should contact Rouge Traders to report the company that did the first job in 2006, Matt Allbright could chase Council vans on his motorbike, demanding your money back.
