AN armed robber threatened staff bookmakers with what is thought to be a handgun before making off with cash from the shop.

The raid took place at 12.15pm today at the Coral bookmakers in Beckfield Lane, Acomb. A man, holding what appeared to be a handgun, approached the counter, threatened a male member of staff and demanded cash. He was given an undisclosed amount of money and then ran off in the direction of Ostman Road and Viking Road.

Armed police from the Firearms Support Unit are now helping to search for the robber who is described as white, with a “skinny” build and about 5ft 8in tall. He was wearing a grey-coloured hoodie top that was covering his face and black tracksuit bottoms.

Witnesses or anyone with information that could trace the suspect or help the investigation are asked to contact York CID as soon as possible on 0845 6060247.

Information can also be passed onto Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

This imbecile must surely be caught in a matter of days if not hours. Why did he target the bookies on a Wednesday? Rubbish racing so there cant have been much money in there especially with York Races been called off ??

It's obviously somebody from the nearby estate. Although if a skinny 5ft8 male is all the police have to go on that doesnt narrow it down because most yobs round there fit that apperance. Hopefully the bookies has CCTV and the imbeciles mugshot will be published. Somebody will know who he is even if his face is covered - the clothes should give it away . . .
