DETAILS of plans for a new public swimming pool at the University of York will be presented to city leaders next month.

Charlie Croft, City of York Council’s assistant director for lifelong learning and culture, said work was ongoing to ensure a pool was built at the expanding university, along with other fitness facilities.

He said: “Representatives from the council, including elected members, have been participating in the university-led stakeholder steering group to look at the issue of the new pool. The aim of the group is to develop a brief for the swimming pool complex and oversee the development.”

A draft final report was drawn up by the steering group in June. Consultants were subsequently asked to report back on where on the campus the facilities should be and to suggest other leisure facilities that might go alongside it.

Mr Croft said the report would be discussed in September.

The update came in response to calls from Labour councillor Janet Looker. She said: “This is a big issue for the city and it should not just sit with a few people who are in the loop.

“A proper pattern of progress reports needs to be started so that we can monitor the timetable and keep the project up to scratch.

“With the ongoing lack of progress with the Barbican Centre and so many missed opportunities there, we do not want to see the swimming pool suffer from lack of progress after a long period of neglect.”
