Store ready for big day

Workmen put the finishing touches to the petrol station at Morrisons Workmen put the finishing touches to the petrol station at Morrisons

MORRISONS supermarket chain has announced the opening date for its York superstore.

The new development on Foss Islands Road will be opened on October 15 by Morrisons' chairman Sir Ken Morrison and the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Irene Waudby.

Work on the supermarket began last January and its development has created 300 jobs.

Staff are making sure everything works.

The bakery recently fired up its ovens to make sure they were in full working order and then donated all the bread to the Salvation Army.

A spokesperson for the company said: "The site will be unrecognisable from its former use when the new store opens, offering a wide range of goods from fresh food and grocery items to home and leisure goods along with beer, wines and spirits.

"It will feature an in-store café and Market Street - Morrisons' unique collection of traditional, specialist fresh food counters, including the butcher, baker and fishmonger."

The petrol station will be open this Friday and will be the 17th Morrisons site in the country to sell a bioethanol fuel - branded as Harvest BioEthanol E85 - which is said to be more environmentally friendly.

Phil Maud, petrol director at Morrisons, said: "Morrisons is proud to be the country's first petrol retailer to open BioEthanol E85 refuelling pumps, reinforcing our position as the UK's largest forecourt retailer of alternative fuels.

"We believe that by encouraging the use of BioEthanol E85 we can contribute to a reduction in the harmful effects to the environment caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

"Creating demand for this product will, in the medium to long term, present major opportunities for UK farmers, who have always had strong support from Morrisons, to supply their excess cereals capacity to supply bioethanol manufacturers."

Currently, the majority of cars will not run on bio-ethanol, which is a mix of petrol and agricultural produce, although new Saabs and certain new Volvo and Ford Focus models are compatible.
