DIRECTOR Sean McAllister will take part in a question-and-answer session at City Screen, York, after Friday's 6pm screening of his documentary A Northern Soul.

Last year, McAllister was put in charge of Made In Hull, a week-long series of projections and installation events that launched Hull’s tenure as the 2017 UK City of Culture.

A Northern Soul (15) finds McAllister returning to his hometown where he reflects on the changes to a Yorkshire city hit by cuts in public spending and divided by Brexit. He follows the story of Steve Arnott, a struggling warehouse worker by day and hip-hop performer by night, who harbours his own creative dream.

"Back home in Hull, I began filming Steve and wondering whether he can, against the odds, unlock the opportunities to build a better life? Is social mobility possible in cities like Hull? What role does culture have to play in this?" asks McAllister.

His previous films include 2004's Sundance Jury Prize-winning The Liberace Of Baghdad and 2015's Sheffield Grand Jury Prize winning, BAFTA-nominated A Syrian Love Story. A Northern Soul launched this year’s DOC Fest in Sheffield.

Dave Taylor, City Screen's marketing manager, says: "We’re pleased to have been able to get Sean McAllister to visit York with his new documentary and to be able to answer questions after the screening."

Tickets for Friday's show and a second 6pm screening in September 18's Discover Tuesdays slot (without a Q and A) are on sale on 0871 902 5747 or at picturehouses.com/york.
