A YORK couple are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary today.
Terrence Goodall, 88, and Margaret, 91, of Holgate, met when he was in Egypt’s canal zone with the West Yorkshire regiment and she worked as a manager in a clothes shop.
He first laid eyes on her when he saw her serving in the NAAFI canteen one night and was immediately smitten.
Terrence said: “She said, ‘He’s tall and good looking’. She chose well. I’m her toyboy!”
They married in Egypt in 1953. Terrence subsequently travelled Europe and the Middle East with the army and the couple finally settled in his home town, York, in 1998.
The milestone is celebrated with a blue sapphire, but Terrence said: “My wife’s got enough jewellery!”
It is also their niece’s birthday today and the couple plan to celebrate both events with a family meal at the weekend. The couple have two sons, Stuart and Jonathan, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
