DOZENS of bikers from around the world came to York this weekend to compete in an international speed and skill competition.

The World Wheelie Records event was held at Elvington Airfield on Saturday and Sunday, with about 60 riders from around the UK, Ireland, France, Holland, Finland and the US travelling to York to take part.

Riders could compete to find out who could complete the fastest 1km wheelie, or who could reach the highest speed on the day, with speeds of 206mph recorded for wheelies, and more than 226mph for the straight ride.

Clerk of the course Trevor Duckworth said the event, which has run since 2006, was the only one of its kind, and welcomed riders and their families to the city over the weekend.

Speaking on Sunday afternoon, he said: "The world record is actually 217 miles per hour, set by Ted Brady last year. We haven't had any riders doing 200 this year, simply because of the wind - it's really windy out there on the main runway.

"Turnout has been very good, despite the weather forecast for today. We've proved that wrong, as we do at Elvington time after time, and it's been absolutely gorgeous all weekend."

The event also benefited from a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Spitfire, which made low passes overhead before the afternoon session.
