INVESTIGATIONS are underway after a car fire in York and a van fire near Selby overnight.

Fire crews were called to Sudforth Lane in the village of Beal just before midnight where there was a Ford Transit van on fire.

They used two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus to put the fire out.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the van was "totally burnt out."

Crews were also called to Moor Lane in York shortly before 1am to put out a car fire. They used one hose reel to extinguish the flames.

The police spokesman said the Ford Ka was "partially burnt out."

"Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of both fires," the spokesman added.

A North Yorkshire fire service spokeswoman added: "Both are believed to have been started deliberately."
