THOUSANDS of students from across York, North and East Yorkshire will get their A-Level results tomorrow.

Among them are musical twins Adam and Ben Quilter who are looking forward to taking up places at two of London’s top conservatoires.

The talented brothers, from Scarborough, studied at York College.

Trombonist Adam and his drummer brother Ben, are going on to study at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity LABAN Conservatoire of Music and Dance, respectively.

Adam is going on to study BMus (Hons) Music in Classical Tenor Trombone and Ben to study BMus (Hons) Performance Percussion and Drum Kit.

Their talent was initially nurtured by their parents, who play in the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, and bolstered by the vibrant music department at St Augustine’s School, Scarborough where they went before coming to York. They now both want to have the best chance of becoming professional musicians.

In coming to York College they have been able to take a double-dose of music at A-Level; music and music technology, alongside ancient history and English literature, giving them a broader sense of musicianship.

Adam and Ben said: “We’ve had a good grounding from our A-Level music and music technology courses, having studied and performed all musical genres, from rock ‘n roll and hip hop to jazz and orchestral.

"Also, being members of the music development centre at college has been particularly good helping us to hone our performance skills.

"The next stage of our musical journey is our next challenge and we are so looking forward to being in London and having a wealth of opportunities to further our careers.”

Those receiving their A-level results today have had a number of changes to their courses compared with previous years.

The most important is that assessment is now largely exam based at the end of the two year course.

Also AS levels no longer contribute to an A-level qualification. This means that AS level is a one-year standalone qualification.

The Press has A-level results covered; there will be a 12-page supplement and full coverage in the paper on Friday. Follow our live blog from 8am on Thursday, August 16, as the stories emerge.
