Gig of the Week: Please Please You presents Caroline Spence & Robby Hecht, The Crescent, York, August 23

CAROLINE Spence's Spades And Roses is probably Please Please You promoter Joe Coates's favourite country-folk record of the year so far.

"It shone brightly earlier in the year, and now she’s bringing her buddy Robby Hecht to play York on their way to the End Of The Road Festival in Dorset, so come show some love, yeah?" says Joe.

Spence and Hecht first met while performing at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in 2013, since when they have gotten into the habit of taking time off from their solo projects to write and sing together in their hometown of Nashville and on tour across the country.

After their two duet singles, Two People and Parallel Lines, were streamed nearly eight million times on Spotify, they figured they were doing something right and decided to write and record a full album. Named Two People in honour of the first song they released together, the title speaks more to the heart of the collection itself. Each song addresses the "endlessly beautiful and difficult task of joining your life with another’s", and in the case of Spence and Hecht, the results are elegant harmonies and songs that cut right to the point.

Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, Spence is now working on her third solo album in Nashville, having garnered nods of approval from the country capital's underground scene.

She and Hecht will be joined on next Thursday's 7.30pm bill by Colin Cutler. Tickets cost £10 in person from The Crescent, Earworm Records in York or Jumbo Records in Leeds or at pleasepleaseyou.com.
