FIREFIGHTERS were called to a fire beneath a bar in York city centre this morning (August 14).

Shortly after 8.15am, North Yorkshire fire service received a report of smoke coming from a basement storage room at a commercial premises on Low Ousegate.

It was a fire to a redundant fuse board beneath the Slug and Lettuce bar that burnt itself out. The fire set off an automatic fire alarm.

It caused damage to the fuse board and an adjacent gas meter.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus removed burnt debris and partially isolated power supplies.

The incident was left with Northern Powergrid.
