WITH reference to the recent letters about cyclists, can anyone remember the last time an article appeared in The Press where a cyclist was prosecuted for any offence.

Such as, riding on pavements, in pedestrian only zones, going through red lights, riding the wrong way down one way streets, riding without lights or even more dangerous riding one or no handed while using their mobile phones with earphones in oblivious to surrounding traffic.

I have seen police cars drive past such offenders and do nothing about it, if it was a motorist doing something similar they would be stopped and a ticket would be issued.

When the darker nights are on us the police will have their usual purge on stopping cyclists riding without lights, have a talk with them, issue them with free high-visibility vests and lights, pat them on their heads and send them on their way.

Some of these could be cyclists who were stopped the previous winter who know that when their batteries run out they only have to wait until next winter to get their free replacement presents.
