HUNDREDS of visitors enjoyed learning more about the city’s past at the first York Walls Festival.

The event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, included a talk by city archaeologist John Oxley, guided walks, and tours of the towers and bars.

An explorers trail was launched for youngsters, who could collect specially designed stamps in a walkers’ passport at six points around the city walls.

And children were invited to take part in a Lego activity session at York Explore Library, where they built their own versions of the walls and other city centre landmarks.

Two of the event organisers, Martin Hetherington from Friends of York Walls and Carolyn Lloyd Brown from Red Tower York, said they were delighted with visitors’ interest in the event.

Martin said Fishergate Postern Tower had its busiest open day in 16 months, with more than 450 people visiting to have a look around and view a display of historic photographs of the walls.

He added: “There’s been a really positive vibe. We do get the feeling this could grow.”

Martin also led an accessible guided walk between the Red Town and Fishergate Postern Tower.

And he said that there are already plans to hold the festival again next year.

Carolyn thanked volunteers for their help in organising the event and invited anyone who may be interested in joining the team to get in touch. She said: “We are hugely reliant on volunteers and we have some really good volunteers but we are desperate for more.”

People can volunteer for as little as an hour a month and the team is looking for residents who could share their professional skills or who would be happy to help with day-to-day tasks. Email friendsofyorkwalls@gmail.com.
