NEW figures have revealed the difference in life expectancy for people living in each area of York.
People in outlying villages - including Poppleton and Askham Bryan - have the longest life expectancy, while those living in Westfield and Clifton have the lowest.
Nationally figures have shown the UK has fallen to the “bottom of the league” when it comes to improving life expectancy.
The country experienced one of the biggest slowdowns in increased life expectancy between 2011 and 2016, according to new analysis by the Office for National Statistics.
Professor Sir Michael Marmot, director of University College London’s Institute of Health Equity, described the figures as “very worrying”. He said inequalities in life expectancy are increasing. “The slow down is more marked in poorer areas.
“And we do know, for example, that the poorer the area the steeper have been the cuts to funding for local government.”
In York there are life expectancy disparities between rich and poorer areas of the city.
