The brewery: Whitby Brewery.
Where is it? East Cliff, Whitby, near the Abbey.
The story: Home brewery Richard Wells launched the brewery in 2013, and quickly enjoyed success. The beers proved popular locally, and in 2016 the brewery was doing well enough to move to larger, purpose-built premises, a mere slosh away from Whitby’s famous abbey. There’s a small bar on site, and the brewery provides tours as well.
The beers: Regulars include Whitby Whaler (bitter), Jet Black (porter), Smuggler’s Gold (pale), Black Death (a heftier, more intense version of the porter), Platform 3 (pale) and Saltwick Nab (ruby ale). Apart from festivals, it’s not very easy to find the beers outside Whitby. So, get yourself to the seaside. The beers are in a good number of Whitby’s pubs, with Platform 3 being a house special at The Station Inn.
Can I visit? Yes, there are tours at 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Book ahead at whitby-brewery.com.
