AN award-winning fish and chip shop could be set to open a branch in York city centre.

Papa’s Fish and Chips, which was named the country’s best

in the BBC show The Best of British Takeaways presented by Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge, has applied for planning permission to open a branch in Parliament Street.

The chain currently has outlets in Scarborough, Hull, Willerby, Cleethorpes and Bilton, and is owned by brothers Dino and George Papas and their father Sid.

Planning documents submitted to City of York Council (CYC) show the business is now hoping to open a branch in the former Phone Tech store in York city centre.

The application for the Grade II-listed property says: “The proposal for this building is to create a fish and chips takeaway shop, with a central entrance into the unit.

“A coal fired range will be located centrally across the width of the ground floor with cooking and prep areas to the rear of the range and at basement level.”

A statement on the Papa’s Fish and Chips website, which proclaims the chain as “the daddy of fish and chips”, says the company started in 1966 when the first branch was opened in Margate in Kent, before making the move to the north of England.

A planning application has also been submitted for an outdoor seating area for the takeaway in Parliament Street.

A spokesman for Papa’s said the company had had good support from the council, but still needed to submit more information.

The new shop in the three-storey building would create seven full time roles.

Opening a branch in York would also put the business in very good company.

Miller’s in Haxby, just outside York, netted the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year award at the National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by the Seafish industry body, earlier this year.

The family-run Haxby chippy fought off stiff competition from around the country following a rigorous appraisal process, which included in-depth auditing by industry experts and visits from mystery shoppers.

Miller’s is run by father-and-son team David and Nick Miller.
