A FORMER bank is set to become three apartments.

A planning application has been submitted to convert the former Lloyds Bank on Haxby Road.

The company wrote to customers last year, warning them that the bank would shut on August 2 2017 and apologising for the inconvenience.

Developers have now submitted plans for the 126.9 m2 site to be converted into two one-bedroom flats and a two-bedroom duplex apartment.

The proposals also detail plans for an enclosed bike storage andbin store in an enclosed yard at the back of the building.

A spokesman for Lloyds speaking about the closure last year said the branch was to shut “due to the changing ways customers choose to bank” - the number of counter transactions at the branch had decreased by 26 per cent in the last year and about 77 per cent of personal customers use other branches, such as Pavement York.

However some residents raised concerns about the impact the closure would have on elderly and disabled customers.

Planning documents say that financial or professional business are unlikely to want to take over the building as companies are keen to focus on the city centre.

The application says: "Haxby Road is predominantly residential with the exception of the Nestle factory and Nuffield hospital.

"The proposed change of use to 130 Haxby Road will provide additional properties for York.

"At present there are two convenience stores within close proximity meaning that there is no need for additional ones.

"As the banks in York are looking to keep their branches central within York city centre, it is unlikely that the property would be occupied by another financial/professional service "

The application says the outside of the building will largely remain the same, with the only changes being new doors and new windows which will replace the shop front. The interior will become a 38.7 m2 flat, a 33.5 m2 flat and a 64.3 m2 duplex.
