CULT Californian songwriter, singer, guitarist, artist and raconteur Jim White will play The Crescent in York on September 6, at the invitation of promoters Please PleaseYou and High & Lonesome.

White, who will be accompanied by guitarist Clive Barnes, has taken a multi-faceted journey through life, from 13 years as a New York City cabbie to alt.country musician and literary commentator for the National Endowment of the Arts, via careers as a comedian, European fashion model, boxer, preacher and professional surfer, as well as days as a dishwasher, landscaper, lifeguard, cook, surfboard laminator and road builder.

White, 61, released his sixth album, Waffles, Triangles & Jesus, late last year on Loose Music. A mind-bending joyride of sonic influences that featured a bevy of Athens’ roots musicians, such as Cicada Rhythm, plus West Coast indie darlings Dead Rock West and rock'n'roll maverick Holly Golightly, it was duly named among Mojo magazine’s Top Ten Americana Albums of 2017.

White is at work on completing a memoir, Incidental Contact, based on a series of uncanny coincidences that befell him during his taxi-driving years in New York.

Tickets for White's 7.30pm concert cost £14 at pleasepleaseyou.com or in person from The Crescent, off Blossom Street, Earworm Records in York or Jumbo Records in Leeds.
