COULD the Bay Horse on Marygate be the location of a Michelin-starred chef’s new restaurant in York?

Tommy Banks, whose restaurant The Black Swan at Oldstead was named the best in the world, announced earlier this year that he would be opening a new venture in the city.

The new restaurant is set to be called Roots York and the exact location of the venue has been a closely guarded secret.

But during the past few days the team at Roots York have been teasing their social media followers with snapshots of the new site.

A video has been posted on Facebook and Twitter of the team posing for photos outside The Bay Horse pub on Marygate.

And contractors have been at work redecorating the premises, which is currently undergoing a transformation.

York Press:

Another post on the Roots York Facebook page said produce will be delivered daily to the new restaurant in York from the garden at The Black Swan in Oldstead.

It said: “This weather has been fantastic for speeding up the process. Especially for the guys designing the drinks menu at Roots. They've been out every day foraging the hedgerows of Oldstead to bring the flavours of this season of abundance to the city of York.”

The Black Swan at Oldstead was named the world’s best rated restaurant in the annual TripAdvisor awards in October last year, and was the first British venue to achieve the honour.

The Bay Horse was built as a pub in 1893-94, from designs by W G Penty. In the past there have also been plans to turn the building into flats and offices.

Roots York has been approached for a comment.
