A MOURNING daughter was given the wrong plot number for her father by her local cemetery.

The woman, who asked not to be named, had selected a plot for her father by the edge of Brayton Cemetery, on the understanding his grave would be close to the edge of the graveyard, so she could install a bench nearby to be dedicated to him.

It was not until after the funeral, however, that she discovered there were several more plots alongside her father's.

Sandra Adamson, clerk of the Brayton & District Joint Burial Authority, confirmed the mistake, and said it had been a clerical error.

She said: "It looks like when the map system has been done, it hasn't been done to scale. When we looked at the map they chose the plot on the edge, but unfortunately there appeared to be another four rows extra so we're having to redo the mapping system. We're now having to change everything.

"Obviously she was upset and has asked if she can put a bench in front of her father which has already been agreed. She asked if we would buy the bench, which we agreed to do. What she also wanted was to make sure the bench was near her father, and we're accommodating that for her."

Ms Adamson said the burial authority could not understand "why so much land was left", but now the mistake had been noted, "we're not expecting any further issues with this".

She said there was no risk that this had happened previously, and steps had been taken to prevent future confusion.

She said: "We're going to be putting out numbered stones where the plots are, extended by four rows compared to what's on the map."
