Recently in your letters page, Geoff Robb of Dunnington wrote that Dunnington residents always rally round.

I wish I could agree with you, Mr Robb. No one will take on the booking secretary job at the reading room, threatening possible closure for bookings; and the sports club likewise is unable to get a treasurer or helpers. Our wives group ended recently due to lack of support for the new team.

All groups are in a similar situation with lack of support - shops too. Ours is a village of all ages, yet it seems to be the older generation who ‘run’ things. The marvellous village in bloom group are all pensioners, or almost.

Young people are under pressure with families, work, children’s activities and hobbies. So what is the solution? It is difficult to suggest one.
