A CHARITY in York has been given thousands of pounds thanks to the fundraising efforts of local workers.

Representatives from the York Samaritans met with employees at York-based insurers Hiscox last week, where they were presented with a check for £16,305.60.

Staff at Hiscox have been taking part in events throughout the past year to raise funds for the charity, which helps support people who are feeling suicidal or suffering from emotional distress.

Among the fundraising events undertaken over the last 12 months were a sky dive in Bridlington by a team of 15 Hiscox staff.

Members of staff from the insurer also formed the Hiscox Dragon Boat team, and took to the waters of the River Ouse to take part in the annual Dragon Boat challenge, and regular bake sales and fancy dress competitions were held among the 300-strong workforce at the office in Hungate, to help raise thousands for the charity.

Phil Thorn, head of personal lines at Hiscox UK & Ireland, said: “The Samaritans play an important part in supporting the York community. They provide an invaluable, round-the-clock network and we have great admiration for the work that the volunteers undertake.

“We have a wonderful team in York so fund-raising for the Samaritans has been a lot of fun. I’m very proud of the team’s efforts – the costumes, bake sales, not to mention jumping out of a plane and racing down the Ouse.”

Hiscox opened their flagship £19 million Hiscox building in York's Peasholme Green in December 2015, having previously had offices at King's Pool and the company created 500 jobs when they moved to the city.

The firm offers a business club that is open to local entrepreneurs and small business owners.
