A NEW gallery documenting the history of York City Football Club can be seen for the first time during an official ‘Open Day’ at Bootham Crescent on Sunday.

City supporter Richard Snowball, a member of the club’s Sporting Memories group, has created the gallery using archive photographs, newspaper articles, vintage programmes and other items of City memorabilia donated to the club’s foundation.

The gallery - which features boards covering nine different decades - will be located in the 1922 Bar at Bootham Crescent until next summer, when it will be moved to the new community stadium currently under construction at Monks Cross.

Richard said it had been a labour of love which started after the foundation was left a collection of old programmes, newspapers and memorabilia by the family of a City fan.

“The Sporting Memories group was tasked with doing something with it all and we felt it would be a good idea to do a history of York City,” he said.

“I think it will be interesting for younger fans to see the history of York City in black and white.”

Foundation manager Paula Stainton said: “We wanted something that would commemorate the club leaving Bootham Crescent and which helps us take all our memories with us as we go into the new stadium.

“We are delighted that we are enable to launch it at the start of this final season - the ‘end of an era’ at Bootham Crescent.

“The boards are fabulous and well worth coming to have a look at, whether on a matchday or during the week. There is so much to learn from them and it’s a really important part of local history.”

The free open day, which takes place between 10.30am and 2pm, will give fans a chance to meet City players and management and watch a first team training session and the official 2018-19 season photocall.

Additional attractions for youngsters will include funfair rides and stalls, bungee trampolines and a bouncy slide.

A licensed bar will be open in the Walwyn Lounge and light refreshments will be available in the 1922 Bar.

All funds raised will go towards youth development.

A special Programme Fair will also take place in the 1922 Bar on Sunday, giving supporters the opportunity to purchase vintage programmes from a variety of clubs.
