THE owners of a craft brewery are submitting plans to open a new bar by Acomb Green.

An empty shop on The Green will be turned into a bar serving a selection of high quality beer as well as gin, wines and spirits, under plans outlined by Crooked Brewing Ltd.

The team say they aim to transform the shop into a contemporary suburban bar with a capacity for about 60 people.

It will be the first bar for the North Yorkshire-based microbrewery, which already supplies beer to pubs in York and Leeds including The Ackhorne, The Phoenix and Walmgate Ale House.

Steve Dawson, of Crooked Brewing Ltd, said: “We are aiming for a suburban bar different to what’s already there, we’re looking to compliment what’s already in Acomb.

“You can expect a relaxed, sociable place for an evening out.

“In short, our business is high quality beer, wine and spirits , a comfortable place to meet with friends and a real alternative to going into town.”

An application for planning permission for a change of use is pending.

The bar aims to sell beer from microbreweries to showcase local beer.

The Green currently has a restaurant, cafe, pub and takeaway and Steve said it hopes to open for similar hours, provisionally Wednesday to Sunday.

The empty shop used to be Tate Appliances and A1 Motor Stores. It has a small terrace to the front.

The plans have been welcomed by local people, with support from Facebook group the Acomb Collective, reading: “Yes please! This is what Acomb really needs! You can count on my husband and I to be great customers” and “What a great idea for this empty shop, it’d make a perfect bar.”

Crooked Brewing Ltd was launched a year ago as a development of a learn to brew business run by Steve Dawson and Andrew Evans.

They have been joined by friends Mark Field-Gibson and Hudson Aschmann.

The company currently has a warehouse in Church Fenton.

The plans would be a further investment for Acomb, which has recently welcomed a new greengrocer stocking local produce and baked goods and a beer shop, Hop & Glory, in Front Street.
