The half-yearly report of the York County Savings Bank had showed a total increase of £573, 580 6s 2d. Even after suffering a heavy loss after the death of Col F Shann, a custodian trustee, the number of new accounts opened had increased and children’s accounts and school savings were growing in popularity. A stained-glass window made in memory of Miss Elizabeth Hornsey had finally been finished and installed at St Paul’s Church, Holgate Hill, York. Paying tribute to Miss Hornsey, Canon Topham said the window was a tribute to her true Christian life, for a lady who loved church and its worship. Lily was well known in the city, and for many years was honorary secretary of the Young Women’s Christian Association. And Architect George Channon had been instructed to prepare plans and specifications for building work on the extension of Malton Town Hall.

Malton’s biggest social event of the year, the agricultural show, had struck lucky once more. The show field was in good condition despite the heavy showers of the past few days and for early visitors there was warm sunshine. Every trade stand space was again booked up well in advance and entries in most sections were up to the usual figures. And although they had almost disappeared from the country scene the agricultural horses were again one of the highlights of the main ring. Dusty Springfield was back in the charts with her new disc, I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten. Other first-timers that week were Herb Alpert with This Guy’s In Love and Simon And Garfunkel with Mrs Robinson.

Plans to open a nine-acre marina costing £300,000 in Ripon had suffered a setback. The marina, already given the go-ahead on a former gravel pit off Boroughbridge Road, alongside Ripon racecourse, had struck a legal hold-up. A Scarborough man was poorly but stable in hospital following an abseiling accident on cliffs at Ravenscar. A rescue helicopter and the Whitby Inshore Lifeboat attended the scene, along with rescue crews. And more than 100 pupils of St Lawrence’s school, York, put on a polished performance of The Piper. The pupils had performed the play twice, giving parents plenty of chance to see all their hard work.
