The soaring temperatures brought delays of more than an hour to rail passengers when a rail buckled at York Railway Station.
High temperatures can cause the metal on rail tracks to move out of shape.
The problem was noticed after 2pm as temperatures in the Yorkshire capital climbed to 27 degrees Centigrade.
Initially it was feared the rail would create disruption and delays until 8pm.
But engineers who inspected the buckled rail decided by 3.40pm it was not damaged as extensively as feared and services are now expected to return to normal by 5.30pm.
At least one train has been delayed by 75 minutes and others have had lesser delays.
The problem came on one of the busier weekends of the year with York races underway and many hen and stag parties heading for the city.
