I AM really surprised it has taken so long for the York Museums Trust and English Heritage to start talking to each other about collaborating over the future of the York Castle site (“New tie-up for tower revealed”, July 5).
I have been suggesting for years that rejoining the medieval Clifford’s Tower with the 18th century buildings of the Castle Museum would be to recreate the precinct of York Castle.
Clifford’s Tower on its mound was the castle motte while the museum buildings which replaced the earlier castle hall, gaol and court room stand in the castle bailey.
The 20th century disconnection of the two parts of the motte and bailey is the cause of much misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the castle precinct.
Bringing the two parts together again and re-uniting them as one single site would provide a long overdue opportunity for telling the full and accurate story of the castle and its significance in the long history of this city.
