CELEBRATIONS were top of the timetable at Askham Bryan College near York when around 400 students took part in its annual Awards Ceremony.

TV vet Matt Brash had the task of handing out certificates, awards and prizes to mark the culmination of the academic year at the college.

Catherine Dixon, chief executive, said: “Our students’ success is a testament to the dedication, expertise and hard work of our staff and to the enthusiasm and commitment of our students.

“We celebrate their academic achievements but it’s not just about qualifications but also about ensuring they have a fantastic and enriching time at college and leave with the skills and confidence to go from success to success. Their hard work has really paid off and we celebrate their massive achievements.”

Winner of the Principal’s prize for Best Student was Max Hamer who has just graduated with a BSc in agricultural management. Max, who is from Skipton, is planning a career in land and estate management after working in New Zealand.

Fiona Macdonald, section leader for agriculture said: “Max has achieved great things at Askham Bryan, both academically and personally. He has a gift for including and nurturing others as well as demonstrating true grit and determination in his studies. During his time as president of the Students’ Union his commitment to the college was exceptional; he is someone who always puts others before himself. I am sure he has a successful and fulfilling career ahead, with great things to come.”

Amongst those also participating in the ceremony were 19 veterinary nurses who have completed their foundation degree courses and made their declarations as associate members of the (RCVS) Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Register of Veterinary Nurses.

For Vicki Graham it was a particularly special occasion as she received the Royal Agricultural University’s Student of the Year Award and it was a double celebration for her as she switches to the ‘other side’ of the educational fence next month when she will join the college’s academic staff as a lecturer.

Sarah Reynolds-Golding, section leader for Veterinary Nursing said: “Vicki has been studying with us for four years from her Level 2 diploma through to gaining her Foundation Degree. She’s very strong academically, she’s conscientious, hard-working and an extremely worthy winner. We’re delighted that next month she is joining us as a member of the teaching staff.”
