MORE than 50 residents attended a meeting to discuss the future of the former Manor School playing fields site in Acomb.

The ward has one of the lowest amounts of green space in the city and a spokesman for the Labour party group said plans for the area to possibly be developed into housing under the Local Plan will mean a “golden opportunity” to support resident’s health is wasted.

Acomb ward councillor, Stuart Barnes said: “What came out of that meeting is a clear call for the whole of the playing fields, save for the access road that will run through them, to be designated as public open space. It was heartening to see what strong feelings people have about the way Acomb is being short-changed with regard to open space, and the efforts they are willing to go to in order to change this.”
