A FESTIVAL to celebrate the centenary of women gaining the vote will be held at York St John University this weekend.

Beyond the Vote opens on Friday, July 6, with workshops, exhibitions, concerts and talks alongside opportunities to learn more about women’s history in York and reflect on issues faced by women 100 years later.

A plaque will be unveiled by York Civic Trust to recognise the work of sisters Winifred, Catherine and Mary Cruse, who pioneered women’s education at the York and Ripon Teacher Training College for Women from 1846 to 1862.

Events include the plaque unveiling at 12.30pm on Friday at Lord Mayor’s Walk building, a talk by York Central MP Rachael Maskell at the De Grey Lecture Theatre at 10am on Saturday, July 7, followed by the opening of the ‘cultivating women’s history’ rose garden in Phoenix Square at 11am.

On Sunday, July 8, at 6pm, the Beyond the Vote charity gala will be held with Paralympian Hannah Cockroft, York Women’s Equality Party founder Carmel Offord and Julia Unwin, former Chief Executive of Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Tickets cost £5.
