CONSTRUCTION work on the new York Community Stadium is progressing well, and the project is “on schedule.”

The Monks Cross site is taking shape, with the steelwork now complete for the commercial site, leisure complex and east stand.

The floors and roofs are also in place in the leisure site and the walls are being put in at the moment.

Foundations are in for the other stands and the steel structure will be added in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the base of the stands in the stadium area being installed and the swimming pool will be concreted in the coming weeks.

The stadium and leisure complex is due to open in summer 2019.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, executive member for leisure, culture and tourism at City of York Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see the progress being made on site at the new community stadium and leisure complex.

"The buildings and sports facilities are taking shape and we are on schedule.

"I’m looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors when the stadium and leisure complex opens in summer 2019.”

Once complete, the new site will include an 8,000 seat community sports stadium for professional football and rugby league games.

The leisure facilities will also include a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating.

Among the commercial developments on the site will be a cinema complex with IMAX screen, five restaurants and a number of retail units.
