Hambleton District Council is planning to adopt new measures to crackdown on rogue landlords.
The measures, introduced in the Housing and Planning Act 2016, aim to tackle bad practices, stamp out overcrowding and improve standards for people living in rented accommodation.
Cllr Stephen Watson said: “Generally within Hambleton landlords are responsible, but we do come across a small number of criminal landlords who knowingly rent out substandard accommodation.
“It is beneficial to have a range of enforcement powers to be able to address a situation quickly and to be able to share information with other local authorities.”
A report on the proposed legislative changes is expected to go before councillors in the autumn.
