TWO dogs were rescued by police after being left in a car in York on the hottest day of the year so far.

Police tweeted that the owners had left the animals for more than half an hour in the vehicle car in the blazing hot sun on Monday.

They said the window was smashed and the owners would be dealt with by the RSPCA.

“There is no excuse for this, I am utterly appalled,” tweeted an officer. “Officers were in that car for 30 seconds and were struggling to breathe so goodness knows what these poor animals were going through.

“Do not leave your dog in a car on a sunny day! How many warnings do you need? RSPCA York thank you for your prompt attendance.”

The dogs were pictured being given cold baths to cool them down.

Temperatures soared to at least 27C, or 80F, in the York area on Monday, with forecasters expecting further hot and sunny weather through the rest of the week and into the weekend.
