TEMPERATURES have soared into the 80s this afternoon in York and North Yorkshire as the mini-heatwave tightens its grip.

And firefighters had to rescue a dog from a hot roof after it suffered burnt feet due to the heat of the roof tiles at a property in Grovehill Road, Beverley. The labrador was left in the care of a vet, said Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

The weather station at RAF Linton-on-Ouse recorded 27C, or 80F, by 3pm and 28 and even 29C were reported elsewhere in the York area.

The rest of the week and next weekend are expected to remain largely sunny, hot and dry, as high pressure remains over or near the UK, keeping Atlantic wind and rain at bay,

However, it will often be cooler on the Yorkshire Coast, with onshore breezes bringing patches of mist at times.

Forecasters think the fine weather may break next week, with even a chance of a little rain as well as cloud.

However, July is still generally expected to be largely dry and settled, and very warm at times, albeit with some temporary interludes of more unsettled, cooler conditions bringing some outbreaks of rain or showers.
