THERE is now just one month left to nominate your local heroes for the 2018 York Community Pride awards.

The annual prizegiving aims to celebrate residents who go the extra mile to help and inspire their community.

The awards are run by The Press in partnership with City of York Council, which is sponsoring the Public Sector Hero category again this year.

This award is for someone who works in the public sector and has made a difference by helping others or using his or her skills to assist others to improve their environment.

Other categories include, Volunteer of the Year, for people who give freely of their time to help others, Good Neighbour of the Year, for residents who go out of their way to help those around them, Sporting Hero, which celebrates an outstanding contribution to local sport, and Spirit of Youth, for youngsters who set a positive example for other young people.

There are also two group categories for community-based projects and schools who have had a positive impact on their local area.

Stuart Martel, deputy editor of The Press, said: “Every year our York Community Pride Awards reward the many unsung heroes across the city.

“We always hear of incredible fundraising feats, neighbourly deeds and dedication to volunteering, and also of people in the public sector and health service who go above and beyond to help others.

“There is still time for readers to nominate someone they feel

deserving of a Community Pride award and help us celebrate all those inspirational people who are working selflessly to help others.”

Among the nominations so far is community champion Keith Chapman, who has been posthumously nominated for Neighbour of the Year.

Keith, who died suddenly in January, aged 71, was an active committee member of the Nunnery Area Residents’ Association and is a much-missed figure in the area.

The principal sponsor of the awards is York-based healthcare company Benenden Health, while other local companies sponsor each category.

Nominees must live in, or contribute to, the community within the City of York Council area.

Three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed. Entries can be posted to York Community Pride Awards, The Press,

84-86 Walmgate, York YO1 9YN. Or submit your nomination online at

yorkpress.co.uk/communitypride.

The closing date is Wednesday,

July 27. Nominations must include

a supporting statement of no more than two sides of A4 with each entry and may include a photograph,

which unfortunately we will be unable to return.
