YORK Art Gallery is pushing the button on a major new display today.

The exhibition includes ceramic buttons, made by one of the most respected potters of the 20th century and used by top fashion designer Issy Miyake.

Austrian-born potter, Dame Lucie Rie, who died in 1995, was renowned for her beautifully decorated domestic ceramics.

After emigrating to the UK, in the Second World War, she began producing ceramic buttons for the fashion industry.

The exhibition will reveal the findings of new research into this less well-known area of her work, displaying hundreds of her buttons alongside examples of her celebrated domestic wares.

Also on display will be more than 30 works from a private collector which have never been on public display before.

The exhibition opens today in the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA). See www.centreofceramicart.org.uk for details.
