BUSINESSES in York have been warned about a woman who is believed to be stealing items from staff.

North Yorkshire Police said the woman was described as white, in her twenties with a Yorkshire accent and tied back long brown hair, and had been targeting staff areas of businesses in the city centre "by sneaking in and selecting items from private property belonging to staff".

A police spokesman urged vigilance, and said the woman "will use excuses that she is in the area by mistake or for another reason", and encouraged staff to prevent her from leaving if possible.

He said: "If safe to do so, do not let her out of your store but do not put yourself or any of your staff in danger. Consider your own health and safety at all times."
