TWO property developments in York have scooped top awards.

Groves Chapel and Holgate Mews won coveted titles at the North and East Yorkshire Yorkshire’s Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Excellence Awards.

The title of Best Refurbishment or Extension of a Listed Building went to Groves Chapel, which has been developed by property company S Harrison into apartments and a Co-operative Food convenience store. The award category was created to recognise the additional care and attention that is needed in the restoration and adaptation of listed buildings.

Work on the former Groves Chapel completed earlier this year and the transformation of the original building, which sits at the junction of Union Terrace and Wigginton Road, was complemented by the addition of a new build extension. The construction work was carried out by Broadley Group.

Holgate Mews, an exclusive new homes scheme in York, was named the Best Small New Housing Development.

The six new build luxury homes feature a stand-out contemporary design, on New Lane in Holgate near York. Local company RHW Developments completed work on the site, which was designed by Leeds-based Brewster Bye Architects, towards the end of 2016.

As part of the scheme, RHW Developments, also built a new modern social club to replace the existing Holgate Working Men’s Club. The new club offers 270 square metres of space over two floors.

The LABC awards reward excellent buildings and outstanding companies, as well as partnerships and individuals that go that extra mile.

The awards look for high levels of compliance with building regulations, outstanding craftsmanship, technical innovation, sustainability performance, the ability to solve technical problems and the use of innovative products. Both developments will now be entered into the LABC’s Grand Finals.
