AN AWARD-WINNING group of York youngsters have raised £600 for charity with their latest pop-up cafe.

Team Lifestyle Cafe (TLC), which was formed three years ago when they won a major award in North Yorkshire Police’s Lifestyle contest, raised the money for two good causes, SASH - which supports homeless young people - and also for aid work in Sierra Leone.

TLC were also runners-up in the best community project category as last year’s York Community Pride awards.

The money collected at their latest event takes their total to almost £5,000.

The children involved are 15-year-old Aidan Robertson, his brother Ethan and twins Jimmy and Lellie Dalgleish, all aged 13, Luke Smith, aged 12 and Dec Dalgleish, nine.

Around 100 neighbours, passers-by and people attending the nearby York Pride festival, visited the cafe at 128 Knavesmire Crescent in York.

They were able to feast on soup, sandwiches, cakes, pizza, tea, coffee and other refreshments - both homemade and donated - in return for a donation.

Every penny received will be donated to SASH or Sierra Leone, where Jimmy, Lellie and Dec took part in aid work earlier this year.

The youngsters organised and ran the cafe themselves, helped by friends and parents.

They arranged and collected donations from local businesses and also contributed to the baking, as well as waiting on customers.

TLC member Luke Smith said: “It was really good. We were busy and it was a nice day so people were able to sit outside in a gazebo we built for the day.

“All the customers were really friendly and very generous and it is good to be able to help people who aren’t as fortunate as we are.”

Luke’s granny Dinah Smith travelled from Leeds. She said: “It is fantastic. Young people get a lot of bad press so it’s lovely to see them going something so positive.

“It’s amazing how well-run the cafe was and it is wonderful that the community get behind them.”
