As a local history enthusiast I enjoy reading the Yesterday Once More feature by Stephen Lewis and seeing the archive photographs of York in former days.

However, I would like to point out an error in the June 18 edition in which a photograph is described as being of the post office building in Hungate.

What is actually shown is the Ridings Area headquarters of the then North Eastern Electricity Board in Dundas Street. It was here that I began my working life in 1965 as an apprentice draftsman.

The drawing office was at the right hand end of the top floor of the long office building. The pay office, where I collected my £4 per week salary, was immediately beneath. The circular building in front of the office block was erected sometime after I started and completed before my departure in 1968, so the photo is dated some time after 1966. This innovative in-situ concrete building was the control centre for the area’s electricity network.

Part of the curved wall accommodated a huge schematic layout, with flashing lights showing all the power lines, cables and sub-stations etc.
