SELBY cafes are joining the fight against plastic waste by signing up for a new scheme to let people refill their water bottles.

The district council is working with “Refill” to tackle single use plastic bottles in the area. The scheme promotes reusable bottles, by making it easier for people to find somewhere to fill them up for free.

Cllr Chris Pearson said: “We’ve been motivated to support this scheme after watching David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2, which highlighted the issue of plastic waste in our oceans. While all the plastic collected as part of our kerbside collection scheme is recycled, we’re backing this scheme to encourage the use of reusable water bottles.”

He said many Selby cafe owners had already backed the scheme. Businesses with a publicly accessible tap can download the Refill app and add their business details, to be sent a sticker to display in their window.

Cafes signed up include the Little Coffee House, Costa Coffee, Summit Indoor Adventure, The Cafe @ Selby Train Station, Little Miss Muffins, Chatterbox Community Cafe, Micklegate Tea Rooms, Rioco and Hope Yard Cafe.
