SPECIAL events next week will give people chance to talk to experts and get help on how to deal with scams and financial abuse.

The city council is putting on the events with the help of other organisations, in a bid to stop vulnerable people losing out to fraudsters or scammers.

Next week, June 25 to 29, is Safeguarding Week 2018 and City of York Council staff are using the week to tackle financial abuse.

Cllr Carol Runciman, who is responsible for adult social care, said: “It is so important for all of us to educate ourselves as to the risks of financial scams and the realities of financial abuse.

“Safeguarding Week is an opportunity to inform our residents of how to protect themselves and their loved ones from the devastating effects of this kind of abuse and to safeguard the most vulnerable in our communities.”

Financial abuse spans everything from financial control within a relationship to vulnerable individuals being targeted by organised criminals and scammers, and people being inundated with unsolicited post asked them for money for things like lotteries.

Next week’s events will give people chance to get confidential advice for themselves or others who might be at risk.

Trading Standards and the Adult Safeguarding team will be at The Centre@Burnholme on Mossdale Avenue on Monday, June 25, 2-4pm.

They will also be at the The Gateway Centre in Acomb on Wednesday, June 27, 10-11.30am, along with the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Friends Against Scams team.

Finally, Home Instead care company and Trading Standards will be at the Folk Hall in New Earswick on Wednesday, June 27, 10am-12pm.
